Roasted Radish Chips

Roasted Radish Chips

Cure that salty craving without polishing off a bag of chips with this easy substitute! Slow cooking these radishes in the oven makes the process very easy to do without hands on effort!

That Achilles heel… Whether it be salty or sweet, we all have that craving that sneaks up on us! For me its salt. I could pass up the dessert tray all day long but line up a popcorn station and I’m a goner. Trying to get that ‘fix’ with a bit less guilt has led to some fun experimenting! Raw radishes have a bite to them, which makes for a very distinct flavor. Typically, if I’m eating raw radishes, I like a neutral, cream based dip to not compete. When these are cooked, the radishes tame down and take on the seasonings you have chosen, which is great for customizing to your snack platter!

Slow and steady does the trick! There are a lot of ways to create a ‘chip’ out of a fruit or vegetable, most commonly deep fried or dehydrated. What I like about roasting is twofold. First, similar to the dehydration process, prolonged heat dries out the vegetable, creating the crisp texture we all love. Secondly, by roasting this with seasoning, the radish absorbs those flavors, which is perfect if you are trying to emulate a favorite chip (try dried dill, chipotle, smoked paprika, old bay, cayenne, etc). I kept things fairly basic with chili powder to give a little heat but ultimately be a base for anything else. A great and satisfying treat!

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Medallion
  • Mixing bowl

Ingredients

  • 6-8 large Radishes
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
  • Salt and Pepper

Instructions

  • Wash radishes and remove bottoms (helpful if you leave the stems on for cutting!). Using your medallion, cut into thin slices.
  • Preheat oven to 200.
  • Add to mixing bowl and toss with olive oil, salt and pepper.
  • Line baking sheet with parchment paper and lay out radish slices. Sprinkle with powder spices and turn over, repeating the process.
  • Bake for about 2 hours, turn, and bake another 2 hours.
  • Check throughout the baking process for crispness-this low temperature should dehydrate the radishes and make a crisp texture, but not burned.
  • Enjoy as a crunch snack by themselves or served with your favorite dip. Enjoy!
